2025 Resolutions from a Guy Who Doesn’t Make Resolutions

I saw a meme the other day that said, “Life starts at 40. The first four decades are just research.” As a guy in my early 40s, I’d say that’s pretty spot on.

Every new year, we’re hit with the resolution bug. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve focused less on making big changes and more on small improvements. Instead of sweeping goals like “spend more time outside with the kids” or “travel more,” I’m aiming for realistic tweaks along the way.

Big change is tough, but slow and steady improvement? We can all do that. So, after four decades of “research,” here’s what 2025 has in store for me:

Even More Quality Time Without Screens

Brittnie and I waited until I retired from the NFL to have our kids so I could be home with them instead of on the road. They’re 9 and 5 now and they use iPads for school and - like all of us - some leisure time activities. We’ve always been heavy on outdoor time opposed to screen time, and this year, I’m looking forward to even more outdoor activities together. My older son is becoming quite the wakeboarder and it’s awesome being on the water as a family.

More Gym Time

You knew this one was coming, right? Health is wealth. Keeping my body and mind healthy is a lifelong commitment, and tying fitness into my life’s work is too good to pass up.

  • Back in my football days, gym time was all about camaraderie and building character, as much as it was about physical training.

  • After retirement, gym time became my time—a perfect start to the day before diving into the demands of work and parenting.

  • Now, with the boys getting older, they’re starting to join me for those morning workouts, and I’m loving it.

This isn’t a resolution so much as a vow renewal of sorts. Staying committed to a healthy body is also a commitment to a healthy mind. This year, next year, every year.

Giving Back to the Community

The NFL gave me a front-row seat to philanthropy, and giving back has been a core part of my life for two decades now.

As we begin a fresh year, we have residents in all ten suites at The Faine House and we’re working on expanding to help even more young adults in need.

Whatever way you choose to give back this year, I guarantee it’ll bring just as much value to you as to those you serve.

In Closing

For me, resolutions always sound like tasks to check off, and let’s be honest—we all have enough on our lists already.

Instead, I’m using the new year’s energy to focus on personal growth. What’s everyone else looking forward to focusing on this year?

Happy New Year!
